Junior School

FAR NORTH SWIMMING: The Far North Swimming Sports were held on Wednesday 22nd March at the Kaitaia town pools.  The six zones that make up the Far North are: Kaitaia, Central, Eastern, Western, North and North Hokianga.  Within the six zones there are 27 schools from as far west as Mitimiti, north as Te Hapua, east as Totara North and south as Mangamuka.  The weather has been pretty good to us so far in 2017.   This annual event was enjoyed by 300 representative swimmers.  For North Hokianga our swim team included: Monique Roberts-Brown, Helena Samson, Emmylou Pirini, Zaria Murray, Jordan Chapman, Olivia Pirini, Beau Waipouri, Ngataiawa Pirini, and Jazmine Murray.

North Hokianga celebrated with the following placings:

Year 4 boys freestyle: Manaaki Pickering Herbert 2nd place  (Hata Maria)

Year 8 girls freestyle: Jazmine Murray 1st  (Broadwood Area School)

Year 6 boys backstroke: Jordan Chapman 3rd  (Broadwood)

Year 6 girls backstroke: Anika Wallace 3rd  (Kohukohu)

Year 8 girls backstroke: Jazmine Murray 1st  (Broadwood)

Year 4 girls breaststroke: Monique Roberts-Brown 3rd  (Broadwood)

RISING STARS – SWIMMING NORTHLAND

Congratulations to Jazmine Murray who swims for the Nga Papahu swimming club (based at Te Rangianiwaniwa – Kaitaia).  Jazmine attended the Northland Rising Stars swimming carnival, held in Kawakawa over the weekend 11th – 12th of March.  Competing in the 11 year old girls category Jazmine broke 3 Northland Rising Stars records (50m freestyle, 100m breaststroke and 200m breaststroke).  She won 5 gold medals, a silver and a bronze.  She now continues to work towards the Swimming Nationals in November.

Zaria, also swimming for Nga Papahu swimming club, came home with 3 gold medals in the 9 year old girls category.

NORTH HOKIANGA ATHLETIC SPORTS

We had the pleasure of hosting the North Hokianga Schools Athletic Sports on Friday 17th March.  Te Kura o Hata Maria, Herekino Primary School, Kohukohu Primary School, Te Kura o Matihetihe and ourselves Manganuiowae had a great day on our beautifully presented school fields, battling it out with our neighbours in running, jumping and throwing events.

Manganuiowae celebrated with the following placings:

Taylor Samson, Year 2 girls:  1st Long Jump, 2nd High Jump, 2nd 100m, 2nd 300m.  Runner up Champion Year 2 girls.

Beau Waipouri, Year 8 boys:  3rd Discus, 3rd Long Jump, 3rd= High Jump, 2nd 100m, 2nd 300m. Runner up Champion Year 8 boys.

TRILLION TRUST TREK

Formerly known as the Variety Bash,  the Trillion Trust Trek celebrities and their vehicles rolled into kura last Wednesday.  They were on their way around the North in support of the Blue Light Charity.  Our tamariki received “heaps of goodies” including t’shirts, healthy snack foods and school stationery.  Amongst those onboard was famous NZ rock star Tom Sharplin who had time for a quick “jam” with our own school band.

Check out this amazing Fire Truck from the 1960’s, gifted to the Auckland Fire Service from the Los Angeles Fire Department, USA – it is in absolutely mint condition.

Birthday Wishes

Last Friday as well as saying farewell to a former teacher Whaea Anna Karena, we also celebrated Zaria Semenoff-Murray’s 10th birthday, with a shared lunch and a delicious ice-cream cake for dessert.

 

Middle and Senior School News

RYDA FEEDBACK 

Recently senior students attended a RYDA (Rotary Youth Driving Awareness) programme held in Kaitaia.  RYDA New Zealand Limited is an initiative of Rotary Clubs in Australia and New Zealand.  It is a not for profit organisation that has developed a programme to help educate young people about road safety as they approach that period in their life when they start driving a car or are a passenger in a car driven by one of their peers.  Below is some positive feedback received from one of the co-coordinators of RYDA.

 “Students were a credit to your school both in their behaviour and the manner in which they engaged with the facilitators and our volunteers.  We were impressed with their knowledge and the way they participated on the day, they are a credit to your school.  And thank you to the parent that attended, they did a great job with the students all day.”

 

World Vision Leadership Conference  Trip, 30-31 March

This Thursday 30th, a group  of  senior students has been invited to attend the World Vision Leadership Conference to be held at the Vector Stadium, Manukau City.  Students travelling  are Carlos, Aston, Oceania, Stevie-Rea, Rosalee and Helen.  Whaea Esther and Matua Lewis will accompany the students, they will return on Friday evening in time for Kapa Haka.

Congratulations to all who participated in the recent School Wide Athletics Day. We had a very high rate of engagement by our students in all events. They conducted themselves well and the level of competition, spirit and enthusiasm was evident throughout the day.  House Group captains encouraged their House Groups to partake in each event with a noted improvement of participation from previous years.

Open Sevens Rugby Report

Last Tuesday, the Manganuiowae Broadwood Area School Open 7’s Rugby Team travelled south to Simson Park at Moerewa to contest in the North of the North Zone with a view to making the finals in Whangarei in two weeks’ time.  In order to achieve this goal the team would have to make the top 4 at this tournament.  To do so would require BAS to reach the semi-final stage of the Championship or better.

The first game was to be against a Maori Academy kura from Whangarei, but upon arriving at the venue the team was informed that this school had pulled out at the last minute.  This meant that BAS had a bye in the first round and, fortuitously as it turned out, were awarded the points despite not playing this game.

This meant that BAS were slated to play top seeds Kerikeri High School in their first game proper and, as one would expect, were simply outclassed by a big, strong and well-drilled KKHS team, who looked odds on to take out the tournament even at this early stage.

Despite being well-beaten in this first game, BAS decided to throw caution to the wind against their next opponents, Bay of Islands College.  With a never-say-die attitude, BAS elected to keep the ball alive and were well rewarded with two superb tries, one to newcomer, Robin Herbert, and the other to livewire forward, Alec Korewha.  Daniel Haturini converted the first try.  BOI surged back and scored a good try, but it was to no avail with BAS finishing them off with a fine try to vice-captain, Cannon Barry-Campbell.

This win meant that BAS came second in their pool and faced a semi-final clash with perennial rivals Kaitaia College.  By now the BAS team was full of confidence and, despite KC’s higher ranking, took the game to them and almost immediately took the lead with an excellent try to co-vice-captain Carlos Hemara-Ngaiti, who used his strength and speed to outpace the defence and score under the posts. Daniel Haturini converted this try to give BAS a lead which it held until close to half-time when KC scored an opportunistic converted try to draw the game up.

In the second half BAS had their chances but stout defence by KC kept them out and finally KC scored two more tries (ironically to two ex-BAS students) to edge out to  17-7.

However, the BAS team achieved their goal of making the Finals of the Championship in Whangarei next week where they look forward to endeavouring to knock over some of the more fancied teams from other schools.

Finally, this was a really good day and the boys can be proud of the way they played and conducted themselves. The team would like to thank both Matua Lewis Brown and Whaea Denise Proctor for their support, encouragement and efforts on the day.

A planning hui will be held  to discuss the needs of the Broadwood Community. Please come along and bring your ideas or come along to listen. The Far North District Council will also be part of the hui in developing any ideas for the community.

We wish to thank Letitsha Kelsey and Mellanie Taitimu  for all their hard work over their time on the Board and wish them both well.  Letisha  played a very important role in the Board for many years, she held the portfolio of Health and Safety and did a fantastic job ensuring that polices and procedures were updated and adhered to.  Ensuring that our vans were up to standard with WOF and Regos, that they were kept clean and safe for our teachers and students. She also ensured our school pool was kept clean and up to standard. She also ran the Breakfast club once or twice a week cooking and preparing breakfast for our students. These are only just a few areas Letisha helped and supported whilst on the Board. From all the staff and students we thank you for all your hard work. Nga mihi tino nui ki a koe e hoa mo o mahi i mahia koe.  He mihi hoki ki a koe Mellanie mo o mahi papai.
